Data center servers for leagues?

Post by Blind Cide »

Does it make sense to pay for a data center server for TT?

The alternative is to use "free" home connections, but they can be spotty in their ability to serve our wide geographical needs. We haven't had any home servers that seem to compare with the dash data center servers, so it would seem that a data center solution might be the easiest way to get high quality TT servers.

I looked into colocation in data centers a few years ago and the cheapest one I found was in Las Vegas for Mac minis @ $35/mo., minimum 1 yr. @ $420. I did a quick search today and found a place in Denver for $39/mo. with a month to month contract. The Mac mini solution might be good for 2 simultaneous games, Denver allows more hardware and might be good for four games.

We had 30 players in PSL this last season. If each contributed $14, that would pay $420 for a years fee. We might be able to spread the cost more widely, but there's one basis for comparison. Are we meeting Doc's cost for running PTT? Would there be enough support for a data center solution? Where should the servers be located?

yes this was the discussion I referenced in the end of the pSL thread.
I think such a solution would go a long ways to equalizing the TT experience (as far as I understand the quality of such a server)
It would make leagues even more fun, draw and keep more players coming back.
No reason why it couldnt be used for CFT , TBML as well as PSL.
The details of hardware as well as who would be admins [can I be admin, can I be UFO...] (and some sort of back up as sometimes on the fly changes happen in leagues) would need to be addressed.
I can contribute more than stated cost.
I think it should be a sliding scale sort of thing - all encouraged to contribute something, some able to contribute more.
Then again I'm a damn socialist so I'd be cool with Smacky and dad covering the costs and then bitchuin about Obama about it :)

I'm in as well.

Who is collecting money?

We could send $20 or so to get the servers up - let others send the same and pay for it for a while.

Is this correct?

Yeah - I have been thinking this would be the way to go. Thanks BC for floating this idea. I am all for it and could contribute a good chunk.

I can contribute...what is the best way to do this? I know paypal is often suggested, but I have my reservations about using it...which is why I never made my promised contribution to Doc :(

A "membership" fee of $15-$30 annually is chump change to help keep the community alive.

My job is making websites. I am pretty good on money at the time so I will talk to my boss and see if I can get my TT server computer moved into the datacenter where we hold all our servers. Location: San Diego, California.
