How do I know can my PC stand....

Post by Metal »

Hey guys, can someone tell me how to find out can a PC stand a stronger GPU?
I got a Intel 82865G with 96 MB Memory size and it's tottaly crap...
I'm looking to get a nvidia FX so can someone tell me can I stand one with 256 mb or 128?
I got a

Intel Pentium 2.66 GHz two processors, and 760 mb ram...
and 40 GB Hard disk, btw I got 85 Hertz on my gpu or is that the monitor... the refresh rate,
also how do I know can a PC stand a gpu, or do they just stand every, once I got a nvidia with 64 mb on my older pc, and it just frozen on the desktop... so I don't wanna throw money out like that...
Also could I run one of these, I wanna play Battle field 2, and I already met the requirements except the dumb GPU:

Radeon X700 (PCIe)
Radeon X600 (PCIe)
GeForce 6600 (PCIe)
GeForce PCX 5900 (PCIe)
GeForce 5800 Series (AGP)
ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition
ATI Radeon X800 PRO
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350LX)
ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 8500 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
NVidia GeForce 6800 GT
NVidia GeForce 6800
NVidia GeForce FX 5950 Series
NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Series
NVidia GeForce FX 5700 Series

Also It needs 128 mb, and I would like to get that 6800, could my pc stand it? Anyone now? lol

You will need to know what kind of slot your comp has for a graphics card....PCIe, AGP, PCI

Well what's the best? I think I got AGP or something, not sure, well, how do I find out?
Again, what's the best of 'em...?
I think I found out what type I got :

If that isn't correct, what I've found, how do I found out then?
If it's that PCI, could I run the GeForce 6600 (PCIe) one...? even that's PCI-Extreme (I think)... Can I run it?

Thanks again.

Heres a link to see what kind your comp has. Open the side of the comp and match these up. Your comp already has PCI, you need to see if you have a PCIe or an AGP.

AIDA - tells you your MOTHERBOARD name (and lots of other info...)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys ... AIDA.shtml

Google it and you will find info about it including what slots(pci-e or agp) it does have.

You need to choose your next graphic card be fitting with your motherboard

You have to open your computer case. and look how powerful your power supply is. Look for detail of XXX W. XXX might be eg 300W. This no program can tell you. Big black thing in upper corner.

If your power supply is too weak for the new graphic card you will need to update it too with a more powerful one.

If the card cost around 70 dollars 350W should be fine. If it starts to be better quality card and costing over 100 dollars you need atleast 450W
power supply.

Thanks Triv and Jerry, I'll see what can I do...

EDIT: Allright, I downloaded and it and I found something in the Display Tree and there is "Windows Size" and then comes "PCI / AGP Video" What that mean? I got both?

Actually try this program. I had problems finding the my motherboards name with the earlier program.
http://www.tweaknow.com/powerPack.html

I have older version myself. but look out for system info. > system summary > 2nd line (right after computer system) says model: -------
If u dont have that line look for later in mainboard > model. same info.

Google what there reads... you should find your motherboard info
