I think that most armies don't grow as easy any more...because like Cas said, EVERYONE is in an army. This means that armies fight with each other for control of players and for control of (sane) newbies.
For proof you can just look at UF and SA. They are probably the two oldest TT armies and they got control of a large majority of TTers.

This simple thing behind armies is the human "need" to be in a group. The new people to TT usually like to join a newer army, so that they fit in easy. When they get used to the TT world and make a name of themselves, they take three routes: Stay in that army and help it grow, join a stronger army, or join the Invisible Army. Unlike the popular belief in this thread, atleast half the people playing TT are not in any army whatsoever.
What it all boils down to is this: Do you want to be in an army with your friends and have fun, or do you want to "go solo" and still have fun with your friends?
