New Computer - Think Tanks wont open

Post by Baba »

I just set up a new computer I just purchased (a BTO 27" iMac )
I copied over all files, app's and preferences from my previous computer.
So far most everything opens up just fine, EXCEPT for Think Tanks.

It just does not respond in any way.
It is the exact duplicate from the previous machine.

Clearly something must be reset or re triggered to get it to work on the new machine.
This vaguely rings a bell, but I dont recall the fix.
Can I get some help here?

Just to be clear it is not the activation code I am missing, it does not even open up at all.

btw I re-download the TT app from Garage Games, that would not open either.
Many Thanks!

I'm not sure about this, but it might have to do with your resolution settings. Try using a lower resolution on your monitor... like 1280 x 800.

Open TT, then if it runs, set the options to a resolution lower than your monitor resolution. I had issues with this once, and changing resolution helped. You might also want to have it windowed instead of full screen.

Also, if you hit Command-Return, you can jump to windowed mode.

Well thanks for your responses, however it still is not opening.
TW, that thread you linked to had the post by Jerry that said he had "copy and pasted" it numerous times with no problems, never needing to re-install.
( In my situation an attempt to re-install hasnt worked anyway)

LGM, I tried to re set the monitor setting, however it still did not open.

Other ideas?

Are you transfering from a G3 or G4 Mac? I can't remember why, but that doesn't seem to work.

[EDIT] Oops, just reread your post that the fresh download of the app doesn't work. That's a head scratcher.

Try the target disk mode to boot from your old computer's disk:
Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the new computer on.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
Open the System Preferences on your new computer and select the old computer's disk in the Startup Disk panel then restart your new computer.
Now if TT doesn't start while booted from your old disk, its probably not the files but something to do with the new computer's hardware.
When you're done, on the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.

In the past when migrating app's and preferences, docs to a new computer I have used Target Disk Mode and it has worked great.
I tried to this time but it wouldnt work using my Firewire cable, I believe Firewire 800 cables are different than Firewire 400? I have the older type cable so it would not fit the new machine.
It gave me the option to use a ethernet cable so that set up was accomplished that way.
I suppose I could get a Firewire 800 cable to try that....

When poking around in the TT inner files I noticed specific references to my (older comps) graphic card, in:
pref.cs-
$pref::Video::preferOpenGL = 1;
$pref::Video::profiledRenderer = "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO OpenGL Engine";
$pref::Video::profiledVendor = "ATI Technologies Inc.";
$pref::Video::profileVersion = "4";
$pref::Video::resolution = "800 600 32";

^Forgot about that pref., but the new install shouldn't have that in the prefs. so I'm still scratching my head about why it won't work.

monoprice.com in Rancho Cucamonga, CA has the best prices on 800/400 cables. $2.22 for shipping.

Did TT never get past the PPC version? TT's get-info lists it as a PPC app.

Try installing Rosetta from your Snow Leopard install disk's optional software installs.

Yeah It works fine on my previous IMac (Intel)

I recall it did take some kind of update to get it there.

From MacUpdate:
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.1.0.2:
Universal Binary
Adjusted Tanks to make heavy more useful
Made Aiming easier
Changed reload station so that powerups are not cleared
Scrumball now hops toward center of map
Added an option to cycle between all maps from a dedicated server
Increased time that low ammo message is on the screen
Increased range of more...
REQUIREMENTS
PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.1 or later, 3D acceleration card.
